Devon and Americans, an island and other stuff

It’s a little while since I posted and, as I don’t want to get out of the blogging habit, this diary of sorts needs to be updated and so, here goes:

I had a bit of a Christmas shopping phase, buying smaller gifts again this year, bearing in mind that we all have too much “stuff”.  Buying the presents is quite straightforward, it’s wrapping them that takes all the time.  Now the appropriate parcels have been delivered to geographically more distant family and so it’s on to the next batch.

I’ve sorted out the office at home, too, after a fashion.  The photo albums I had all over the place whilst searching for photos of the younger Mr Dancing for his birthday mosaic have now all been found another home and are in chronological order again.

A couple of Sundays ago,  I did Part II of the DSLR Photography Course at Lacock.  This time was so different – the weather was grim compared to the glorious sunshine earlier in the month when I did the first part.  This meant we stayed put in the venue rather than go walkabout.  We needed to, because this time the course content was much more technical – shutter speeds, exposures, f-stops, focal point, apertures and all that malarkey.  I had quite a headache all day, so I don’t think I absorbed it all.  I need to practise more.

We’ve been to North Devon for a couple of days in VERY blustery, wet weather.  At the same time, the younger Mr Dancing, L and friends went to spend the weekend on Lundy Island (in the Bristol Channel) –  as there were some phone lines down just before they returned, they weren’t sure there would BE a helicopter back to the mainland until it landed. (The above was after take-off on the way back – I needed a North Devon photo here even though it’s not mine!)

I digress. When we were in North Devon, we popped into Braunton Museum just in case anything new and genealogical was to be discovered.  Someone was erecting a display of the Americans in Braunton during the war, when thousands of troops were based in North Devon, practising for the D Day Landings.  The display was of still photos taken from American archive footage discovered earlier this year.  Neil, an enthusiastic history buff who was organising the feature, spent a good half hour telling us all about the Americans locally and showing us a 10 minute film.  It’s hard to believe that they used LIVE ammunition on local beaches.  It’s hard too to consider that so many of them lost their lives on a Normandy beach.

We met up with family and friends – there never seems to be quite enough time to do it all but we did take Mum out to the Ring O’Bells at Prixford for a pre-birthday lunch on Saturday.

The following day, we were off to Salisbury to meet my sister, niece and family for lunch at Anokaa – and then pootled around the town before coming home.

Last Wednesday we went, with The Willow Lady to see the shouty Welsh comedian, Rhod Gilbert, at Komedia in Bath.  We had dinner there (prepared by the River Cottage Canteen) – in fact Mr Dancing and TWL had the hugest portions of pork I’d ever seen served!

I like Rhod Gilbert – his rantings about buying a duvet are absolutely hilarious.  On Wednesday, though, I did think that, had he left out all the swearing during his act, it would have been a good 20 minutes shorter and the comedic value would have been improved.  I find that excessive swearing  just adds “blah” words which really mean zilch and detract from the brilliance of the observations.  Perhaps it had something to do with the venue – wonder what he was like at The Apollo in Hammersmith the next day?  I guess I’m just getting old but surely the more you use a swear word the less impact it has?

Recently, I ordered some sample Moo Cards at the very reasonable rate of 50 for £3 – really they are free as the postage and packing cost is £3.  They come with a black border at the bottom advertising their company. Being a cheapskate, I’ve trimmed this off and used them on greetings cards.

I think that’s mostly it … I’m still doing the dawn-walking from Monday to Friday and have been since the end of August.  It’s become harder going since the mornings have become darker and darker and so we are now going for the Winter/Lite version of Dawn Walking which means we now start ten minutes later at 7.10am and only do 20 minutes instead of 30.  If you knew how much of a morning person I am (not) then you would be amazed and amused that I am doing this!

The Spooky Party Photos

It’s been just over a week since the party. These photos were taken by several people, mainly The Suave Devil.

Here, E looks very calm even though there is a strange and spooky being right next to her!

What a wonderful week!

I’ve had an excellent week.

Monday morning I was off to Latin and we had a good session.  After lunch Mr Dancing and I travelled to Dorset where we stayed overnight – I’ve already posted about Michael McIntyre and the amazing poppies. We also visited Kingston Lacey and Badbury Rings.

On Wednesday I was TIRED … so had an extremely lazy day.

On Thursday I met (for the first time) the lovely Mitmot and her husband and dragged them around on a sightseeing tour. Mitmot belongs to a forum I visit. She is extremely talented with her sewing and crafts – not to mention having an affinity with animals.  She got to know a kangaroo called Roger on the beach whilst in Oz!

On Friday, I met (again for the first time) my third cousin once removed  (according to my genealogy software). I “met” W online when I started researching my genealogy and we have consulted each other about the mysteries of our family history over the past few years.  It was good to meet her and her husband at last for an enjoyable coffee break whilst they were en-route to Devon for a wedding.

Today I have been taking part in a Photography Workshop.  It was excellent.  Now I have a better understanding of  depth of field, f-stops, shutter speeds, exposures, white balance and ISO settings.  Being able to ask a professional questions face-to-face was so much better than reading any amount of manuals and photography books.  There were 8 people taking part and we all felt we had learnt a lot.  Whether we’ll be able to remember it all is another matter!

These are some of the photos I took today with my now properly re-adjusted camera.  Would you believe I had had the camera on a mega ISO setting for over a month without realising and with the wrong point of focus setting?

Hopefully I can do Part 2 of the workshop next month.

Mish-Mash Post

002

This is a bit of a mish-mash post.  All week I’ve been intending to write something but then my mind flits.  It flitted from   “I must keep up-to-date with my blog”  to “Is it worth keeping the blog?”  to “Yes I’ll blog – it’s a diary of sorts and good to look back on”.    Also it provides a reminder of events … you know big things like “I’ve actually washed my car at last”.  I’m sure it must be a year since I last washed it and so if it’s recorded here perhaps I’ll be a bit more diligent (and actually remember WHEN I washed it!).  It is usually parked not far from the birch tree in the front garden and so tends to be like a compost bin, with fallen leaves caught in the grille under the top of the bonnet, lichen growing in the seal around the sun-roof and a lovely big spider and web on the driver’s wing mirror.  But it’s a compost bin NO MORE – I cleaned it and now it shines (well almost).  I’ve been careful with my water usage as we’re on a meter – hence the watering can.

SLC

On Thursday I popped along to the Photography Group with 2 friends  (potential members).  The topic this month was Abstract views so, along with a couple of other photos, I took the above.  Well actually I took a similar one with me but realise now that I took the WRONG one – it should have been this one.  Oh well.  I wonder whether you can guess what it is?

On Friday evening, we went with friends to a ceilidh in a nearby village.  The ceilidh was in aid of Amnesty International and the  entertainment included singers, a band, clog dancers,  a caller and dancing.  There was a raffle and a Zaytoun stall selling Fair Trade olives, oil and soap produced by Palestinian farmers … my bar of lemon-scented olive soap smells delicious.

As part of my “What shall I blog about?” flitting, yesterday I did a quick flit around the kitchen:-

006

and what did I see?  Well a mish-mash (again) of magnetic thingies on the fridge, including “Make today the day that changes your life” beach hut card,  a Krokodillo’s advert in case we want to order a take-away from Queensland and the Latin first declension of femina in case I meet a bunch of Romans and want to talk to them about women.

007

The Krokodillo made me think of another reptile in the kitchen – this terracotta metal (now there’s a contradiction) lizard which I bought in Utah earlier this year and which reminds me of the vibrant red rock out there.

010

Not far from the lizard is this original water colour of chickens.  I picked up the framed picture from the charity shop for a mere £1.50.  I just love the expressions on their faces.  They are obviously enjoying a juicy bit of gossip.

011

On the shelf sits this white Wedgwood(?) jug and a card with a beautifully-painted comma butterfly – it’s a greetings card I bought with the intention of sending.

012

I am enjoying the beautiful colours in this photo.  The calendar is from Carol and is twelve-months’ worth of her beautiful photographs of western USA.

014

Of course we can’t be without this invaluable Nigel Slater book – well stained and splashed with all sorts of ingredients.

018

Ingredients?  Mr Dancing was assembling them yesterday for chutney making.  He is hoping that Nanny Dot’s Chutney recipe will produce results as good as hers.  Thank you P and L for sending it!

019

I think that Mr Dancing is an Olympian in the chutney-making department – hence my preserving jar ring award.  Each ring represents … well   …   er …  will have to think about that one.  Any ideas?

copy of all

This flitting has now led me to Mr Dancing.  Thank you so much for putting up with me over the last seven years.  There we are in the photo above on 11 October 2002 …

Mr and Mrs

and here we are again just a few weeks ago at D’s wedding with the lovely C.  Have you noticed how Mr Dancing doesn’t have a hair out of place in either of these photos?  So I have to compensate for this!

Well I shall flit no more …. if you’ve managed to stay with me so far …. well done.
