Sydney Opera House

I read in the news today that the Danish architect of the Sydney Opera House, Jorn Utzon, has just died, aged 90. An award-winning architect, he won a competition in 1957 to design the building, and left the project before The Opera House was opened in 1973.  He never visited the completed building after disputes about costs, which overran.

I first caught sight of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge from the plane as we flew down from Cairns – one of those sights that takes your breath away.  I’d seen photos of it so many times but to see it in real life from the air was just amazing.

The fish-scale effect of the distinctive sail-like roofline glistens in the sun and is a geometric work of art in itself and was being admired by the Buddhist monks I saw just opposite as I was photographing it.

It’s so sad that the architect of one of the most famous buildings in the world never got to step foot inside it.

Feet and Fish

After comments from Lace and Angel about my odd sized feet, I threatened to post a photo… well, of the size 6 left foot anyway!

Now Angel is talking on the Forum about her fish … so this photo is a double whammy for her!

I forgot to say that the fish is a Sergeant Major fish!

Looking for inspiration

Mr Dancing says that, after a year, I will have run out of things to say and pictures to post on this blog.  So, of course, now I have to prove him wrong! Read the rest of this entry »

Somewhere in the world …

….  the sun MUST be shining and the sky MUST be blue … but not here where, for the last couple of days (and probably most of the summer), it has rained and rained and rained.  Yesterday we had torrential storms with thunder and lightning.  Today, again, the skies remain mostly grey or inky black.

The weather has been too uninspiring to do very much  - even blogging seems a bit of an effort today … so again I have looked up some sunny warm looking photos taken in Australia to cheer me (and hopefully you) - they have been chosen as a reminder of just how blue the sky CAN be!

I’ve no idea what the flower above is called

But I do know that these are bee eaters!
