Today is a freezing fog sort of day. The sky is a monotonous shade of pale grey and the air is raw. We had a stroll down by the canal which is frozen over in parts and apparently the lock nearest to us is frozen too. (There was a joke about lock de-icer but I’m not going to use it here).
The canal boats seem huddled against the banks for warmth and, from some of the boats, smoke drifts aimlessly above them. There is no breeze and all is perfectly still and cold. In the hedgerows there are slight hints of colour from the hawthorn berries which still remain clinging onto the lichen covered twigs. Bramble leaves are beautifully coloured and there are cracks in the ice nearest to the canal bank. Nearer home, at the end of the garden, the beech leaves are still firmly hanging on and, as we round the corner to home, I catch sight of the front door, still bedecked with evergreen branches from the garden.
Once inside, it’s homemade soup and red wine and warmth!
A happy, healthy and peaceful New Year to you.

I just found a couple of photos in my camera which I took over Christmas and had almost forgotten about … so this is rather a late Christmas post. The top one is of the Christmas Tree Angel, bought from Windsor many years ago and which I love. The bottom photo is of one of our Christmas guests, Willow, who was extremely well behaved during her stay (as was her owner!).
