Sydney Opera House

I read in the news today that the Danish architect of the Sydney Opera House, Jorn Utzon, has just died, aged 90. An award-winning architect, he won a competition in 1957 to design the building, and left the project before The Opera House was opened in 1973.  He never visited the completed building after disputes about costs, which overran.

I first caught sight of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge from the plane as we flew down from Cairns – one of those sights that takes your breath away.  I’d seen photos of it so many times but to see it in real life from the air was just amazing.

The fish-scale effect of the distinctive sail-like roofline glistens in the sun and is a geometric work of art in itself and was being admired by the Buddhist monks I saw just opposite as I was photographing it.

It’s so sad that the architect of one of the most famous buildings in the world never got to step foot inside it.

It’s a grey, cold November day

… so it’s a good opportunity to think back to sunnier days like this one in Mallorca a few years ago!

All change!

I was looking for a festive photo for December, then decided to change the blog design.  This one is, I think, more navigable and the font is a bit clearer – it allows me to have pages AND a sidebar too, which means that Categories and Archives are more accessible.  Also, I don’t have to edit out the blue border every time I upload a photo.

I don’t like things to stay the same for TOO long!

Happy Birthday Sis!

Here she is at our great-niece’s christening last Sunday …..
